National Treasury's Central Supplier Database (CSD) is the single register of businesses that want to supply goods and services to government departments, municipalities and public entities. Registration is a basic requirement before an organ of state can do business with you, and it is free.
What you will need
- Business registration details, such as your CIPC registration number, if your business is a registered entity.
- Identity numbers for directors or members.
- Your income tax reference number, so your tax compliance status can be checked with SARS.
- Business bank account details, which are verified with your bank.
- Contact details for the business.
- The goods and services you supply, selected from the CSD's categories.
- B-BBEE information, such as a certificate or sworn affidavit, where it applies to you.
How verification works
The CSD checks the information you provide against other government and banking systems, including CIPC, SARS, Home Affairs and your bank. Mismatches are the most common reason a registration is delayed, so make sure your details are consistent everywhere before you start.
Keeping your registration valid
- Stay tax compliant. Your tax compliance status is checked, and an outstanding return or debt can affect your ability to be awarded work.
- Keep details current. Update the CSD when directors, bank details or contact information change.
- Keep your CIPC returns up to date, so your company remains in good standing.
The registration itself is straightforward. Most problems come from inconsistent details across different systems.
Once registered, you will receive a supplier number, which government buyers use to identify your business. Keep it handy: you will be asked for it on quotations and tenders.
